從前有個(gè)小弟弟和小妹妹，非常相愛(ài)。他們的母親已謝世，他們又有了一個(gè)繼母，繼母待他們很不好，常常暗地里想方設(shè)法虐待他們。有一次，兄妹倆正在屋前的草坪上和其他的孩子們玩，草地旁有個(gè)水池，水池緊挨著屋子。孩子們圍著圈兒不停地跑啊，跳啊，做著數(shù)數(shù)的游戲。
"內(nèi)克，貝克，饒了我，
我將給你我的小鳥(niǎo);
小鳥(niǎo)兒得幫我尋草，
草料我拿來(lái)喂母牛;
母牛兒吃草產(chǎn)牛奶，
牛奶我送給面包師;
面包師給我烤面包，
面包我拿來(lái)喂小貓;
小貓得替我逮耗子，
耗子要熏在煙囪里，
熏好的耗子好細(xì)切。"
他們玩游戲時(shí)站成了一圈，這個(gè)"細(xì)切"落到誰(shuí)的身上，誰(shuí)就得馬上跑開(kāi)，其他的人就去追他，逮住他。就在他們玩得正起勁時(shí)，繼母從窗口看見(jiàn)了，十分惱火。由于她會(huì)巫術(shù)，便念著咒語(yǔ)，把小弟弟變成了一條魚(yú)，把小妹變成了一只小羊羔。于是，小魚(yú)兒在池塘中游來(lái)游去，十分憂傷;小羊羔在草地上走來(lái)走去，心里悲涼，絲毫不肯吃草。就這樣過(guò)了很久，有些生客來(lái)到城堡里，狠毒的繼母心想："現(xiàn)在機(jī)會(huì)來(lái)了!"便叫來(lái)了廚子說(shuō)："去草地上把那頭羊牽來(lái)宰了，咱也沒(méi)什么別的好東西來(lái)待客。"那廚子去了，把羊兒牽到廚房，捆住了她的四蹄。這一切，小羊羔順從地忍了。當(dāng)廚子拔出刀子，在臺(tái)級(jí)上磨了磨，正要下手宰羊時(shí)，他看到了似乎有條魚(yú)兒在來(lái)回地游動(dòng)，并抬起頭望著他。這魚(yú)兒就是那個(gè)小弟弟，因?yàn)樗匆?jiàn)了廚子帶走了那羊羔，它便尾隨著從池塘游到了屋里。于是小羊羔對(duì)他苦叫道：
"深池里的小哥哥啊，
我的心兒多悲涼!
那廚子正把他的刀磨亮，
就要把我的命兒?jiǎn)省?quot;
那小魚(yú)答道：
"啊，那上面的小妹妹，
我在深深的池水里，
我的心呀多憂傷。"
廚子聽(tīng)到小羊羔會(huì)說(shuō)話，而且對(duì)著下面的小魚(yú)說(shuō)著那樣悲涼的話，不禁大驚失色，知道了這只羊不可能是只普通的羊，而是北屋里那位狠毒的女人念過(guò)咒的東西，于是他說(shuō)："別害怕，我不會(huì)殺你的。"于是另外換了頭羊，宰了給客人做菜，接著他把這只小羊羔牽去送給一位好心的農(nóng)家婦，還向她講訴了自己的所見(jiàn)所聞。
這農(nóng)家婦恰巧做過(guò)小羊羔的乳母，她立刻猜到了這只羊羔是誰(shuí)，便把它帶到女先知那兒去。女先知為小羊和小魚(yú)兒念了幾句咒語(yǔ)，他倆立刻恢復(fù)了人形。這以后她又把他們倆帶到了一座大森林中的一間小屋里，從此他們獨(dú)自住在那兒，生活過(guò)得愜意而快活。
"西瓜、西瓜，開(kāi)門吧"
從前有兄弟倆，一個(gè)富，一個(gè)窮，那富的兄弟從不肯接濟(jì)那個(gè)窮的。這個(gè)窮弟弟靠作谷物生意為生，日子過(guò)得緊巴巴的;而他的生意也常常很清淡，以致他無(wú)力養(yǎng)活妻兒子女。一次，他推著車穿過(guò)一片森林，他的一側(cè)是座巍峨的大山，寸草不生，山頂光禿禿一片。他先前從未見(jiàn)過(guò)這座山，所以此刻靜靜地站在那兒，驚訝地凝視著那重大山。
突然，他看見(jiàn)了十二個(gè)身材高大、舉止粗野的人朝他走來(lái)，他想這些人一定是強(qiáng)盜，于是馬上把車推進(jìn)灌木叢，自己爬上一棵樹(shù)，等著看究竟。只見(jiàn)那十二個(gè)人向山峰方向走去，大聲叫道："芝麻、芝麻，開(kāi)門吧!"這空闊的山中立刻裂開(kāi)了一條縫，那十二個(gè)人邁步走了進(jìn)去。等他們?nèi)哌M(jìn)去后，山門又合攏了，山門又隨即打開(kāi)了，那些人肩上背著沉甸甸的麻袋走了出來(lái)。他們重新回到亮處，只聽(tīng)見(jiàn)有人說(shuō)："芝麻、芝麻，關(guān)門吧!"隨后山門又應(yīng)聲合攏，不露絲毫痕跡。緊接著，那十二個(gè)人就走了。
等他們完全消失蹤影后，這個(gè)窮兄弟才從樹(shù)上爬了下來(lái)。此刻他有點(diǎn)驚訝，這山里面究竟藏著什么?他爬上了大山，也高聲喊道："芝麻、芝麻，開(kāi)門吧!"山竟為他裂開(kāi)了。他馬上走了進(jìn)去，只見(jiàn)整個(gè)山峰中，洞內(nèi)中空，寬闊無(wú)比，里面有無(wú)數(shù)金銀珍寶，熠熠生輝。此刻，這個(gè)窮小伙茫然不知所措，想著他是否可以拿走一些金銀財(cái)寶呢?最后，他還是把他的口袋裝滿了金子，卻沒(méi)拿那些珠寶。出來(lái)后，他又叫道："芝麻、芝麻，關(guān)門吧!"山隨即又合攏了。他于是推著手推車，踏上了回家的路。
如今他可是無(wú)憂無(wú)愁了，即不用為養(yǎng)家糊口發(fā)愁，還可以拿出錢來(lái)干別的事情了，小日子過(guò)得美滿幸福，他還樂(lè)善好施。無(wú)論如何，錢一花光，他就到他兄弟那兒去借個(gè)籮筐，又重新去拿。但他從不去碰那些價(jià)值連城的大寶貝。后來(lái)，他又想去取財(cái)寶，再次向他兄弟借那個(gè)籮筐。由于弟弟的家產(chǎn)眾多，且家境一直紅火，哥哥早就為之妒火中燒了。他心里發(fā)窘，那些財(cái)富從何而來(lái)，他的兄弟拿籮筐去干嘛?于是他眼珠一轉(zhuǎn)，頓生奸計(jì)，他在籮筐底涂上了瀝青。等他取回籮筐時(shí)，發(fā)現(xiàn)籮筐底部竟粘著塊金子。他立刻跑到兄弟家，質(zhì)問(wèn)他，"你一直用籮筐在量什么?""量玉米和麥子。"另一個(gè)答道。這時(shí)他把那塊金子擺在他眼前，威脅他說(shuō)如果他不講真話，他就要到法庭去告他。于是這個(gè)窮兄弟向他吐露了事情的來(lái)龍去脈，就好像這事才剛剛發(fā)生似的。聽(tīng)到這些，這個(gè)兄弟就命令下人備好了馬車，只身前往，決心趁機(jī)多裝回些奇珍異寶。
到了山前，他大聲喊道："芝麻、芝麻，開(kāi)門吧!"山門打開(kāi)了，他走了進(jìn)去。那兒的，金銀財(cái)寶盡現(xiàn)眼底，好長(zhǎng)一段時(shí)間他都不知該先抓什么好。最后，他還是把馬車裝滿了寶石，滿得簡(jiǎn)直再無(wú)地方可裝了。他真希望把這車滿滿的財(cái)寶運(yùn)出去，但是由于他腦子里充滿了金銀財(cái)寶，竟把山名給忘了。他大聲喊道："西瓜、西瓜，開(kāi)門吧!"但那名字念錯(cuò)了，大山巍然不動(dòng)，山門緊閉，理也不理他。此刻，他急得像熱鍋上的螞蟻，只見(jiàn)他愈是絞盡腦汁去回憶那名字，越是心亂如麻記不起來(lái)，此時(shí)就是有再多的珍寶也愛(ài)莫能助。傍晚，山門又打開(kāi)了，走進(jìn)了那十二個(gè)強(qiáng)盜。他們一看見(jiàn)他就哈哈大笑，并大叫道："你這鳥(niǎo)東西，這下總算給我們逮住了!你以為我們不知道你曾兩次來(lái)過(guò)此地?那時(shí)，我們沒(méi)有去抓你，這回，你休想走出此地!"這時(shí)他哭喪著臉?lè)洲q道："那兩次可不是我，而是我的兄弟。"不管他怎樣求饒，怎樣訴說(shuō)，他們始終置之不理，最后還是讓他的腦袋搬了家。

The lambkin and the little fish
There were once a little brother and a little sister, who loved each other with all their hearts. Their own mother was, however, dead, and they had a stepmother, who was not kind to them, and secretly did everything she could to hurt them. It so happened that the two were playing with other children in a meadow before the house, and there was a pond in the meadow which came up to one side of the house. The children ran about it, and caught each other, and played at counting out.
"Eneke Beneke, let me live,
And I to thee my bird will give.
The little bird, it straw shall seek,
The straw I'll give to the cow to eat.
The pretty cow shall give me milk,
The milk I'll to the baker take.
The baker he shall bake a cake,
The cake I'll give unto the cat.
The cat shall catch some mice for that,
The mice I'll hang up in the smoke,
And then you'll see the snow."
They stood in a circle while they played this, and the one to whom the word 'snow' fell, had to run away and all the others ran after him and caught him. As they were running about so merrily the stepmother watched them from the window, and grew angry. And as she understood arts of witchcraft she bewitched them both, and changed the little brother into a fish, and the little sister into a lamb. Then the fish swam here and there about the pond and was very sad, and the lambkin walked up and down the meadow, and was miserable, and could not eat or touch one blade of grass. Thus passed a long time, and then strangers came as visitors to the castle. The false step-mother thought: "This is a good opportunity," and called the cook and said to him: "Go and fetch the lamb from the meadow and kill it, we have nothing else for the visitors." Then the cook went away and got the lamb, and took it into the kitchen and tied its feet, and all this it bore patiently. When he had drawn out his knife and was whetting it on the door-step to kill the lamb, he noticed a little fish swimming backwards and forwards in the water, in front of the kitchen-sink and looking up at him. This, however, was the brother, for when the fish saw the cook take the lamb away, it followed them and swam along the pond to the house; then the lamb cried down to it:
"Ah, brother, in the pond so deep,
How sad is my poor heart!
Even now the cook he whets his knife
To take away my tender life."
The little fish answered:
"Ah, little sister, up on hig
How sad is my poor heart
While in this pond I lie."
When the cook heard that the lambkin could speak and said such sad words to the fish down below, he was terrified and thought this could be no common lamb, but must be bewitched by the wicked woman in the house. Then said he: "Be easy, I will not kill thee," and took another sheep and made it ready for the guests, and conveyed the lambkin to a good peasant woman, to whom he related all that he had seen and heard. The peasant was, however, the very woman who had been foster-mother to the little sister, and she suspected at once who the lamb was, and went with it to a wise woman. Then the wise woman pronounced a blessing over the lambkin and the little fish, by means of which they regained their human forms, and after this she took them both into a little hut in a great forest, where they lived alone, but were contented and happy.
